Branched Housing, located in the South Bronx, aims to provide a more sustainable form of affordable housing. It attempts to challenge what we saw as a constrictive accepted norm of individual living by integrating principles of co-living and working into the site. Divided into two main components, the work and the living are stacked one on top of the other, residents can descend into a layer where there are work opportunities. In addition to the work programs, some amenities enable or improve access to employment. The co-living layer is realized to collectivize several functions (living, cooking, sport, and raising of children) which are commonly understood as internal to modern housing’s private sphere, the traditionally understood apartment.
