Intro Program

Columbia GSAPP’s Summer Intro Program is a 5-week intensive course offering 3 points of credit.

The course structure allows students to work with GSAPP instructors in small groups to develop their design skills and critical thinking by participating in a daily design studio. Alongside the architecture studio, students are invited to participate in a rich series of related program offerings including lectures, discussions, workshops, and site-visits to learn about computation, making, ecology, history/theory, and the practice of architecture.

Students also benefit from portfolio workshops and experience the culture of graduate-level instruction at Columbia University, with outcomes including credits that may be transferred to their home institution and preparation for a future graduate school application.

Summer 2026 Intro Program dates are July 6 – August 7, 2026.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through the end of June.

TUITION AND FUNDING

In Summer 2025, the Introduction to Architecture program has a tuition rate of $4,590 for the 3-point course. Please see the Tuition & Aid webpage for additional information and University fees.

The Hilyard Robinson Scholars Program offers full tuition scholarships for selected GSAPP’s Intro to Architecture summer program students. Named in honor of the School’s first Black graduate and former chair of the architecture department at Howard University, the Hilyard Robinson Scholars Program is intended to promote diversity, inclusion, and equity by introducing career paths in architecture and its related fields.

Admitted students are invited to submit a scholarship application for consideration prior to the May 15, 2025 deadline. Learn more about the Hilyard Robinson Scholars Fund or contact arch_admissions@columbia.edu with any questions.

REGISTRATION AND ORIENTATION

More information about online registration and orientation will be shared with admitted students in June.

Orientation will include a lecture, an introduction to faculty and staff, as well as a presentation by GSAPP students of their design work.

HOUSING

Short-term summer housing is available through Columbia University. Admitted students will receive instructions for applying to housing in the spring. Housing applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until all available units are filled.

Please note that students must be admitted to the program before applying for housing, so applying early is recommended.

Expenses

The cost of studying in New York City is chiefly affected by the individual student’s budget. The cost of living in New York City, in general, is higher than that of other major American Cities.

In the Columbia University Morningside Heights neighborhood there are ample banks including Chase Manhattan, Washington Mutual, Banco Popular and Citibank. Students may opt to open a new bank account or use the ATM facilities to link their banks. Most of the restaurants and businesses in the neighborhood do not accept personal checks.

Students will be advised as to where to eat, shop, etc. during orientation. There are many good (and cheap!) restaurants in the Columbia University neighborhood as well as on campus.
