The project was inspired by the rich history of courtyard housing and the desire to create a multiplicity of open voids at different scales through dense urban housing to maximize light and ventilation. By organizing three North/South bars on the ground plane, creating two distinct linear gardens. One garden connects to the Dalia Group Community Garden to the south, and the other serves as a more private area for residents. Above which rises a mass of five stories organized to create two distinct courtyards opening to the ground plane below while maintaining perimeter-facing exterior circulation. Each long bar is comprised of a series of back to back u-shaped apartments. In-between each unit, three types of void are deployed: a light-well, individual balconies, and a shared garden. A strict 25’ x 25’ column grid facilitates the CMU-steel hybrid construction.
