Arctic Apothecary

Situated amidst the Aleut Islands, a historic haven for over 25,000 indigenous Aleut people, our project unfolds. Today, Unalaska bustles with a thriving deep-sea shipping industry and pioneering research into local botanicals and marine life, drawing from ancient healing traditions rooted in the land. Inspired by millennia-old suturing techniques employing sinew thread, binding together human, plant, and animal into a unified Aleut essence, we embarked on a journey to reconcile traditional wisdom with modern healthcare needs.

Conversations with medical professionals and Aleut Community Health Aide Program leaders unveiled a stark reality: essential medical resources are scarce, forcing women to travel hundreds of miles for childbirth, severing them from their community’s support. Our vision emerges—a women’s health clinic seamlessly integrated into the heart of botanical healing in Summers Bay. We envision repurposing greenhouse space, symbolically weaving Western medical facilities with the fabric of indigenous knowledge, ensuring women and children remain anchored to their heritage and land.

The Arctic Apothecary emerges as a testament to cultural resurgence, bridging ancient practices with contemporary medical care, fostering a harmonious fusion of tradition and progress in the community of Unalaska.
