Lucas Coelho Netto is an architect and urban designer from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and the founder of MATTERIA (2021). As a multiscalar architecture and urban design practice operating in national and international contexts, MATTERIA positions design as a framework for resilience and adaptability, to address social and environmental challenges facing cities.
MATTERIA has garnered significant recognition, winning the C40 Reinventing Cities São Paulo competition, earning second place in the Charitas Waterfront competition, and becoming a finalist in the Weefor Arq II competition. Lucas’s work has been showcased at the 2023 UIA Congress in Copenhagen and published by Springer, AIA NY and C40 Cities.
Lucas holds a Bachelor of Architecture from PUC-Rio (2019) and a Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design from Columbia GSAPP (2022), where he was awarded the Lucille Smyser Lowenfish Memorial Prize. His past collaborations include projects with Gávea Arquitetos and Agencia TPBA in Brazil, X-Topia in New York, MASSLab in Porto, and Bjarke Ingels Group in Copenhagen. Lucas’s current collaborations include consulting with FADAA in Amman, Jordan and Local Office Landscape & Urban Design in New York.
