Kaja Kühl

Kaja Kühl (Dipl.Ing, AICP) is an urban designer and the founder of youarethecity, an urban research, design, and planning practice based in Brooklyn, NY.

The practice works with communities, government agencies, and non-profit organizations to co-create mission-driven projects at multiple scales.

Integrating contextual research, mapping, community workshops, and design speculation, this work takes on a range of formats from master plans to architecture, writings, mappings, events, exhibitions, and policy proposals.

Kaja is a passionate educator and teaches seminars and design studios at Columbia University and the City College of New York in addition to frequent workshops in non-institutional settings. From 2018 to 2020, she led the Hudson Valley Initiative, a curricular initiative facilitating applied research into the complex spatial, ecological, and economic opportunities of this vast region.

She holds a Diploma in Architecture from the University in Karlsruhe, Germany and a Master of Science in Urban Planning from Columbia University in New York.

Her design work and writing have appeared in Landscape Architect Magazine, Volume, AD, the Venice Architecture Biennale, Center for Architecture, and Urban Omnibus.
