Fight, Occupy, Resist

A look into urban squatting

Little known by the majority of the public, social movements that fight for the right to housing occupy empty buildings and plots, highlighting contradictions on the growth of cities and implementing new models of housing. Based in principles of collectivity, participation and self-managing, these experiences are a laboratory of innovating practices of opportunity of access to housing, understanding of local necessities. The round-table discussion will debate such housing experiments, with the participation of Ticiane Pinheiro (Architect Manoel Congo Squat), Lurdinha Lopes (MNLM-RJ), Alejandro de Castro Mazzaro (GSAPP) and Pedro Rivera (Studio-X Rio)

Alejandro Castro Mazzarro, GSAPP
Alejandro de Castro Mazarro is coordinator of the Latin Lab. He is co-founder of the architecture office Buro-A, which has developed competition awarded projects and public commissions in Spain. Alejandro was coordinator in São Paulo of SLUMLab at GSAPP.

Lurdinha Lopes, coordenadora do MNLM-Rio
Born in Minas Gerais, she got engaged in the Urban Reform and Human Rights movements since the end of the 1970’s. She entered the National Movement for Housing (MNLM) when it was created in 1990 and was part of the national coordination during 10 years. She was a National Councilor of Cities until 2014 and is nowadays state coordinator of the MNLM in Rio de Janeiro.

Pedro Rivera
Pedro Rivera is director and curator at Studio-X Rio since 2011. He is also a partner at Rua Arquitetos, having participated in exhibitions at MoMA NY and Chicago Architecture Biennial. He has a master in urbanism at ProURB FAU UFRJ and was a professor at PUC-Rio.

Ticianne Ribeiro de Souza Ticiane is an Architect and Urbanist graduated by UFF (2008), specialist in Urban Policies and Planning by IPPUER-UFRJ (2011), and is currently enrolled in the Master Program at FAU-USP. Her professional experience focuses on Urban Planning and Popular Housing. Ticiane was responsable for the project of reform of the Manoel Congo occupation, through the Center of Advisory Planning and Research (NAPP)
