Coding for Spatial Practices

This course introduces coding as both a technical skill and a cultural practice. Students will learn the fundamentals of front-end web development—HTML, CSS, and JavaScript—while exploring the contemporary revival of the “handmade web” and the emergence of personal digital gardens.

Together we will ask: How can coding re-personalize the web in an era of templates, platforms, and algorithmic feeds? What role might architecture and spatial thinking play in shaping digital rooms, gardens, or catalogs? How can AI be used not to homogenize, but to amplify individuality and experimentation online?

Through lectures, readings, and hands-on coding exercises, students will create experimental web projects that balance technical fluency with critical design inquiry. Course projects will encourage students to treat the browser as a medium for expression, speculation, and agency—crafting personalized, living websites that resist the monotony of generic platforms and instead reflect unique perspectives, aesthetics, and voices.

No prior coding experience is required—only curiosity, a willingness to experiment, and a desire to rethink what the web can be.
