Westbeth Artists Housing Redevelopment Proposal

In 1970s when Westbeth Artists Housing opened, it was meant to be a self-sustaining living, work, and exhibition space where struggling young artists stayed until they became established. Westbeth stands as a time capsule in New York’s ever-changing artistic, cultural, and physical landscape, and is the last enclave of a generation of artists in that era of New York City’s art history. The aim of this proposal is to create that self-sustaining model which in future would enable Westbeth Artists Housing to keep its goal of being the supporting hub for talented artists of New York City. Group 6 presents the development and adaptive reuse of Westbeth Artists Housing through a 7 year, 4 stage process, enabling a financial model for self-sustaining modern, safe, and more efficient living conditions for its residents. The primary focus is to develop senior friendly accommodations, with a physical rehabilitation center for the elderly residents. The second stage of our development proposal, high end residential apartments, will ensure cash flow for the future sustainability of the community. The development process carries long-term goals of a self sufficient community with financial stability to afford capital expenditures for further renovations of the building.
