Mater Plan by Julia Gielen and Lena Pfeiffer

Mater Plan

This project re-imagines multi-generational living by facilitating mutually beneficial relationships for the young and the increasing elderly population. A network weaving through the site functions as both a corridor and social space, encouraging inhabitants of all ages to interact and establish a sense of community. The use of pivot doors allows the network to expand into the private yards and public gardens, inviting flexible reconfigurations of space. Units are designed with a focus on mobility and the potential for aging in place. The House typology consists of an ADA accessible first floor that allows for the possibility of live-in help. The levels above allow for flexible ownership depending on family size or amount of roommates. The Tower typology lines the busy corner of the site and provides amenities to the community. Outdoor spaces have been carved from both typologies signifying visual and physical connections through these moments of subtraction.
