The New New Museum in Rockaway Beach provides resources for people to become engaged citizens through cultural production. As a neighborhood, Rockaway Beach, Queens faces unique challenges but also has unparalleled access to natural resources. What was once a getaway location for wealthy and middle-class New Yorkers became a place to put low-income housing stock in the 1960s. Since superstorm Sandy in 2012, the area has mostly recovered but continuing economic stagnation and lack of basic resources like clinics, community centers and places to get fresh food are a challenge for this and surrounding neighborhoods. The New New Museum is an art and business incubator that combines resources which fill existing community needs, like a grocery store and community center, with sound, video, and fine art studios that serve a rotating group of community members and outside participants. The crux of the project is a spatial strategy for creating an activated void/circulation space that would allow an art institution to make room for additional programs and exploring what emerges from those adjacencies.
