This project proposes an inverted version of 432 Park Avenue which has been largely criticized for its luxury prices and low occupancy rate. Focusing on Park Avenue from 51st to 56th Streets as the site, we “flipped” the pencil tower 90 degrees and placed it in the middle of the Avenue; this space formerly served as open-cut space for steam engine trains but has since been redesigned with green infrastructure. This long-distance horizontal space spanning five blocks expresses our desire to create more open space for the public. The pencil tower’s existing programs were relocated at ground level, asserting public access for all. The upper residential portion is redesigned so units share communal kitchen spaces. Four unit types offer flexibility for different household compositions and low-income housing.
