By order of a proposed Islamic legal endowment, the highest naturally occurring elevation on the Atlantic coastal plain, Todt Hill High Point, is established as a waqf that imagines the site for the interweaving of science, faith, and ecology.
The endowment proposes a climate observation station, hilal (crescent moon) sighting grounds, masjid (prayer) and wudu (ablution) spaces, and a sanctuary for groundhogs liberated from the Staten Island Zoo.
Guided by the Gregorian and the Hijri (Islamic) calendars, the project proposes a return to ritual, reclamation of agency in religion, and the creation of inclusive outdoor spaces.
