Hydrogen Synergies

The project transforms an abandoned coal power plant in Dunkirk, NYS, into a state-of-the-art Green Hydrogen production facility, turning an industrial relic into a beacon of sustainability and resilience. This innovative project combines energy production with community engagement by incorporating hydroponic gardens, a farmer’s market, interactive educational exhibits, water purification system as well as a research and training center by focusing on the reuse of existing infrastructure. The plant aims to use electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, to produce hydrogen, demonstrating the shift from fossil fuels to clean energy. Visitors can observe this process from a multi-level deck with interactive displays explaining each step. The hydroponic gardens utilize waste heat and water from the plant to grow fresh produce, providing an educational space for sustainable agriculture. The farmers market promotes local agriculture and sustainability, while adjacent community spaces on site host workshops and events focused on renewable energy. The water extracted for cooling of the plant is purified and oxygenated before returning to the lake which promotes a healthy ecosystem in a contaminated lake. This project revitalizes the region economically and environmentally, serving as a model for transitioning industrial sites into sustainable energy hubs. By blending energy production with community interaction, the Dunkirk Green Energy and Community Hub exemplifies how sustainability can be made accessible and engaging for all while also ensuring a resilient and independent future for the Dunkirk.
