In selecting the dunes adjacent to the motels as the site for my project, I aimed to safeguard not only the dunes themselves but also the vital highway linking Montauk to the rest of the island. Recognizing the inevitability of erosion, I delved into the natural mechanisms that sustain dunes over time. However, while my initial focus was local, the modular approach I’ve developed can be adapted to any beach environment worldwide.
Understanding the relentless force of erosion, I tried to comprehend the intricate ecosystem that sustains dunes over time. It became evident that dunes, ever in motion, owe their stability to a delicate interplay of flora and fauna. Witnessing successful beach restoration efforts in Europe through the seeding of new plants, I conceived the idea of a modular sea garden, drawing inspiration from the resilient and beautiful construction methods of boats.
