The Ferrari Crash Strip

The Ferrari Crash Strip is Ferrari’s new exclusive Formula 1 Testing Facility, where a series of technical and specific testing facilities occupy a portion of the Las Vegas Strip to restore Ferrari’s reputation after the incident at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix. The Formula 1 Grand Prix in the center of Las Vegas was a highly anticipated event that, after two years of planning and construction at a cost of over 520M dollars, stopped in the first eight minutes of the first practice round. Carlos Sainz, a driver for Ferrari, drove over an unsealed manhole that popped open and destroyed the bottom of the 15M dollar car- a car that was designed by a team of 1000 engineers over the course of about 24 months. The broadcasting team captured the incident from multiple angles, revealing the material and spatial protocols that are designed to televise any incidental failures. Following the principles of fluid dynamics that explained the force of the incident, the proposal extracts the thrill of speed by exposing the origin of the technical dangers behind it and creating new proximities of viewership through an exclusive Ferrari’s members’ club in the heart of Vegas. All the while reminding of the spectacle that the sport has become- where safety, regulations, and global fandom are fuelled by the eventuality of a crash.
