This project aims to explore the Queer neighborhoods of the ballroom, vogue dance cultural history, and research on the alternative family structure “House” and kinship of queer youth, raising a design proposal to deal with spatial marginalization of minority culture and rehabilitation of the queer community.
Alternative Family Structure “House” refers to queer caring communities and performance organizations that are not tied by blood ties. Different family structures contribute more diverse forms of performance. They compete and rival through dance and music to express their personality and self-identity and blur the boundaries of gender identity.
In the proposal, Alternative Family Structure also corresponds to the relationship between architectural form and function, where both the native and alternative families share a similar family structure, but the emotional support and connections they provide are different but complementary, like an adaptive building system to accommodate the different functions provided by the four original pier sites.
So, my design intended to operate an architectural system that adapted depending on the pier to provide passive socialization and performable spaces. With the ambiguity about function usage, both citizens and queer members can find themselves in the free social, gathering, and performance space.
