Our proposal is a redesign of current public outdoor swimming pools into seasonally adaptive open spaces, in order to provide more recreational space that can contribute to community engagement. There are six outdoor swimming pools in Harlem, but these pools are only open for less than three months during a year, adding to the scarcity of open spaces in Central and East Harlem. In our case studies, we have examined two outdoor swimming pools that have been designated as individual landmarks in our study area. We proposed the construction of a mobile ice rink above the existing pool during winters, providing nearby residents with more outdoor activities, like ice skating and bumper cars on ice. Based on their landmarked status, these adaptive redesign schemes will not change the existing structure and intervene on the site minimally.
