Bronx Vertebra responds to the missing role of public service in the Bronx and becomes an opportunity to reassess the fundamental modules of living. There is a need for intermediate conditions between the public and private from households to the neighborhood, from dwellings to the community, and from the community to the city. How does one calibrate the various levels of privacy and connectedness? At the scale of each residential building, the Vertebra is a network of shareable amenity services and collective spaces in between units. On the street level, a central spine inside the block ties the community programs, forming a system of flexible, intermediate zones. The Vertebra bridges the residents with public services and, on an adjustable scale, connects the residential community to the larger city.
