Land Buoy

Though there are rich natural resources in Mastic Beach, the resources haven’t been fully recognized because of the problem of occasional flooding. We propose “Eating Cycle” as a program for revitalization, transforming the community from a food desert into an attractive destination. The Eating Cycle consists of four stages: foraging, cooking, eating, and digesting. Each includes various activities located around the site. In considering flood risk, we focused on buoys as a prototype that is adaptive to sea-level change. The Land Buoy is a medium between the land and the sea, and between humans and nature. Land Buoys in various scales are distributed around the beach and accommodate various activities in the Eating Cycle. The structure of the Land Buoy makes natural elements more intimate to humans. We suggest not only the Land Buoys, but also a more intimate relationship between humans and nature, to generate a sustainable development of the Mastic Beach Community.
