Buell Dissertation Colloquium Keynote Address

Keynote address by Joseph Heathcott titled “Angels of Memory Guard the City in Freefall.”

The biennial Buell Dissertation Colloquium brings together a select group of doctoral students from diverse institutional and disciplinary backgrounds working on dissertation topics related to the history, theory, and criticism of American architecture, urbanism, and landscape. Ten to twelve students from universities worldwide will be invited to present a twenty-minute talk drawn from their dissertation research. Selections will be announced by mid-February.

Joseph Heathcott is an Associate Professor at The New School in New York, where he teaches in the Schools for Public Engagement and in Parsons School of Design. His interests include: cities real and imagined; history and theory of architecture; metropolitan and community studies; civic and public cultures; cities as living archives of creativity, urbanity, and design. His work has appeared in a wide range of venues, including books, journals, magazines, exhibits, juried art shows, documentary film, and radio broadcasts.

He has served as Chair of Urban Studies, Faculty Chair of Civic Engagement, and Associate Dean for Academic Initiatives. In 2010-2011 he was the U.S. Fulbright Distinguished Chair for the United Kingdom, and Senior Visiting Fellow at the London School of Economics. In 2016 he is the Mellon Distinguished Fellow in Architecture and the Humanities at Princeton University. From 2013-2015 he served as President of the Society for American City and Regional Planning History. He has also served on the Boards of Directors of the Center for Urban Pedagogy and the Urban History Association, and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Planning Association.
