The Lecture in Planning Series (LiPS) Panel

Tue, Dec 8    1:30pm

Choreography and the terrain of urban popular intelligence

Urban built environments are increasingly shaped by complex political, financial, and institutional processes that challenge traditional ways of understanding urban space. As these systems become more difficult to navigate, residents must find ways to understand their surroundings, build relationships, and determine their responsibilities to one another. These everyday interactions shape urban environments beyond policies, property relations, and infrastructure, creating a form of collective knowledge and social choreography.

AbdouMaliq Simone talk explores how these choreographies create living archives of urban experiences, memories, and relationships. Through movement, adaptation, and collaboration, residents navigate changing environments, build networks, and respond to social and institutional pressures. These shared practices preserve collective histories while creating possibilities for more inclusive and emancipatory urban futures.

The Lecture in Planning Series (LiPS) is co-organized by the MSUP Program and second-year PhD students in Urban Planning: Light refreshments will be served. This event is open to Columbia University affiliates with a valid university ID.
