Marcos Zotes ‘12 MSAAD presents the work of Basalt Architects, highlighting how the studio’s work at the intersection of architecture and landscape reimagines geothermal infrastructure across Iceland. By tracing the spatial, material, and ecological strategies behind their bathing projects, Zotes explores how water acts as both a building medium and a social connector.

These architectural investigations serve as the groundwork for SOAK: Rituals of Collective Belonging, the official Icelandic contribution to the 20th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2027. The project expands upon this body of built work to reexamine the geothermal pool as a radical form of public space—framing communal bathing rituals as essential spatial mechanisms for collective belonging.


Marcos Zotes '12 MSAAD is an architect and partner at Basalt Architects, an Icelandic practice operating at the threshold of architecture and landscape, where he has led the design of key geothermal baths, hospitality projects, and exhibitions. Zotes is the curator for Iceland’s entry at the 20th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2027.

He holds a Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design (MSAAD) from Columbia University GSAPP in New York and a Professional Diploma in Architecture from London Metropolitan University.
