Pursuing a Ph.D. in Architecture with Hannah Allawi and Johnny Chiu

Please join GSAPP Career Services for the virtual Ph.D. Information session about pursuing a Ph.D. in Architecture at 10:00 am on October 17th, 2025.

Hannah Allawi, ‘12 MSAUD, is a registered Intern Architect with the AAA (Canada) and NCARB (USA), with over a decade of international experience in Canada, the UAE, the UK, and Japan. She earned her PhD in Architecture from the University of Calgary, focusing on reviving Abu Dhabi’s lost modern architecture through mobile augmented reality. Her research has been presented at Harvard University, Edmonton Design Week, and global conferences. Hannah works with Mode Architecture Inc. and teaches at the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning & Landscape. She also serves as Director of Continuing Education for the AIA–Canada Society and as a Committee Member with the Consulting Architects of Alberta. Hannah holds a B.Arch from the American University of Sharjah and an M.S. in Architecture & Urban Design from Columbia University.

Johnny Chiu, '06 MSAAD is the founder of JC. Architecture & Design, a multidisciplinary studio based in Taiwan and the U.S., known for projects that explore memory, identity, and cultural heritage through community-driven design. His notable works include The Moving Kitchen for Taiwan Railway, A Little Museum Store for Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and Jade Mountain Bench for New York’s Times Square Tower. Featured in outlets such as CNN Travel, Le Monde, and Vanity Fair Italy, Johnny has also served as a juror and speaker for the World Architecture Festival and other global design events. His honors include GQ Man of the Year (2020), Red Dot: Best of the Best, and Gold Winner of the 2023 iF Design Award. He holds an M.S. in Advanced Architectural Design from Columbia University (GSAPP) and a PhD in Architecture & Design from RMIT.
