Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series

Joshua Jih Pan ’67 MSAUD, FAIA
Joshua Jih Pan, FAIA, is a pioneering Taiwanese architect and founder of JJP Architects and Planners. After earning his B.Arch. from National Cheng Kung University, he pursued studies in liberal arts and urban design at Rice University and Columbia University, where he was mentored by Prof. Percival Goodman. Returning to Taiwan in 1976, he founded JJP in 1981, later evolving the practice into a multidisciplinary firm.

Pan’s philosophy centers on architecture as a reflection of social responsibility and cultural depth. He believes that architects must confront both internal ideals and external challenges with honesty, striving for timeless designs that serve people, respect the environment, and balance the client’s practical constraints. His works consistently express environmental awareness and a strong humanistic spirit.

Honored with numerous accolades—including the National Award for Arts and the distinction of FAIA—Pan remains a vital voice in shaping contemporary Taiwanese architecture.

About the Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series
Launched in 2025 in collaboration with the GSAPP Alumni Board, the series is intended to recognize and celebrate Columbia GSAPP alumni who have distinguished themselves through lifetime achievement and professional accomplishments that reflect the ethos and spirit of GSAPP. We hope it will also foster intellectual dialogue among the Columbia GSAPP community and inspire current students as they pursue their studies.

The Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series will also launch the annual Alumni Weekend, a time of reconnecting for our graduates across generations and programs.
