Virtual, Preservation Lecture Series

An engineered iteration of the Trajan’s Column - A lecture by Sarah Healey-Dilkes ACR

The Victorian Iteration is a composition of over 500 plaster panels and architectural sections, a timbered framework and 2 brick chimneys diameters of 5-8M with heights of 15 and 20M. It is located in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and was acquired and installed for display in an historic Gallery which was built for the purpose of displaying the Museums collection of large architectural plaster casts in natural daylight. The talk will share insights and questions encountered during a recent 2 year phase of conservation work uncovering the layering of materials and interventions which track its mutable history.

Sarah combines work as a Senior Sculpture Conservator at the Victoria & Albert Museum with maintaining a private conservation practice based in Cambridge, UK. Since graduating in conservation studies from the City and Guilds of London Art School in 1990 she has gained 30 years experience working on both contemporary and historic art collections with materials ranging from stone, concrete, plaster, terracotta to 3D prints and mixed media installations. She is currently working on V&A’s large scale re-furbishment projects and new displays as Lead Conservator for the cast of Trajan’s Column and the recently acquired concrete façade from Robin Hood Gardens, UK.
