Composite Models

Modelmaking is one of the most basic and essential tools available to a designer, and in concept it demands no complex technology and precludes no level of previous experience from a maker. Models have power as a representational tool for individuals, and as a democratizing tool across design practice. By showing a number of student and professional examples, the workshop will categorize and review model techniques, and lead students through a number of ideas about the potential of models to expand from their role as an item on a deliverable list, to a critical tool for design thinking from beginning to end. An emphasis will be placed on models that use both analog and digital means, models that address both 2D and 3D representation, models that have active media or kinetic components, and other innovative uses of the form.
