“Indigenous Infrastructure”

Julia Watson

In an era of high-tech and climate extremes, we are drowning in information while starving for wisdom. Enter Lo—TEK, a design movement building on indigenous philosophy and vernacular infrastructure to generate sustainable, resilient, nature-based technology. Watson will discuss her book, Lo—TEK: Design by Radical Indigenism, published by Taschen, covering 20 countries from Peru to the Philippines, Tanzania to Iran, demonstrating how millennia-old human ingenuity offers lessons on how to live in symbiosis with nature.

Designer, academic and author, Julia Watson is a leading expert on indigenous, nature-based technologies. She teaches at GSAPP’s UD program and at Harvard GSD, while also leading a landscape and urban design studio: Julia Watson LLC.

Free and open to the public. Organized as part of the Urban Design Lecture Series.
