Deferrals

GSAPP offers admission with the expectation that students will matriculate in the semester specified during the application process. Requests for deferrals are only considered in the case of personal medical emergencies, and additional documentation is required. Please contact the admissions office to learn more at arch_admissions@columbia.edu.

If a deferral request has been approved, the student’s place in the following academic year is guaranteed. International students must notify ISSO to receive guidance on I-20 administration.

The original tuition deposit will be used as an administrative fee to hold the place for deferred students.

Deferred students will be notified via email when an updated offer of admission has been released for the new academic year. To accept the offer for the new enrollment year, deferred students must submit an additional tuition deposit. This tuition deposit will be refunded to the student account following the drop/add period in the year of enrollment.

Applicants who are admitted off the waitlist are not eligible for deferrals.

Any applicant who has been granted one deferral may not defer a second time.
